I killed the Print o' the Waves stole
In keeping with the "new year, new start" theme (I killed a houseplant too), I took it apart and rewound the yarn. I look forward to making something else with it.

I kid you not
I think the photo speaks for itself, but to summarize: after three attempts to complete the shawl using the 800 yards called for (*ehem*), I'm still about 4 repeats of the border short. The border that I already reduced to try to finish it.

I'm left with, I think, three real possibilities for what to do next:
1) Cut it to shreads.
2) Take the border off and try to crochet something on.
3) Use a different yarn to close the gap. I might be able to find the same yarn in another color.
Any votes?
Since virtually all the knitting has been packed, I have picked up a needlepoint project I started about 3.5 years ago. Our mascot:

I dropped this project after completing 0.5% of it, right before I picked up knitting again at the beginning of 2004. It's been a really enjoyable project for the last week or so. It was always at the back of my mind (and my desk), but completing it seemed daunting until now. Just the background to go.
I'm sure we'll return to regularly scheduled knitting after the move. Until then, ciao!

Progress on the shawl

Last ditch effort
Remember this? I'm making my last attempt at finishing it. I have knit and ripped the border twice now, because I didn't have enough yarn to make it all the way around (no more yarn is available, I checked). I had to alter the border to be smaller and then the second time, I had to take a knit row out of the eyelet border that joins the wave border and the main shawl. I mean it, this is it. It will be finished or it's finished.

Love and frustration
All in one picture:

The air conditioner is my new best friend. The stole is my new least favorite project. I got 1/3 of the way around with the border before confronting the truth that I did not have enough yarn to finish. I bought the yarn at Elann a few months ago and this color is sold out. I had no choice be to frog all the border and I have to figure out how to rework it with fewer stitches so I use less yarn. But I will not be doing that now. For now, it's on timeout.

SockapalOOOza socks!
My socks arrived from my sock pal last week! Her name is Katie and she made me some awesome socks. Here are some pictures:

Too bad the weather has just turned to hot to wear them! But I'm looking forward to padding around in them on the cold hardwood floors in the winter. I really love the color.
In other knitting news, here are some shots of the shawl I'm working to wear to Bridget's wedding. The first shot is the first half of the shawl blocking and the second is the blocked half compared to the (still-being-knit) second half.

Once the second half is done and blocked, I will graft them together (so the shawl is symmetric) and then knit the border. BTW, the funky yellow yarn at one end is waste yarn that was used as a provisional cast-on so I can use the live stitches later.
The pattern is the "Print O' the Waves Stole" from Eunny Jang's blog. Her patterns are all really interesting and this one is free!
Back to school work with me.
